Fix Stormwater and Sewage Leaks
While
contemplating a purchase in 1999, NRDA Trustees detected sewage
odor in the beach area. PCRS has a Clover Park Technical College
Environmental Technician class perform a fecal coliform analysis
at the mouth of the creek, at low tide during both a rain and a
non-rain event. Due to high
results, the Public Works Department
and the city did their own fecal coliform test and hydrocarbon
analysis. The results showed extremely high levels of fecal and
extremely low levels of hydrocarbon. The source was discovered
and repaired. PCRS has done other fecal coliform tests and has
had Dr. Barry Goldstein's class at the University of Puget Sound
do some testing on the feeder source streams for ponds. These
feeder streams are in the Gardens section of the Puget Creek
Watershed.
There
was also a sewer repair project in the No. Union Ave. and No.
30th St. area for which the city had to dig up a substantial
area in the Gulch, which PCRS subsequently replanted with native
vegetation, paid for by the city.
Over the
course of only a couple years, there were four sanitary and
storm sewer line breaks investigated by PCRS* and other
concerned citizens in the Gulch area. Luckily, PCRS* was able to
convince Public Works to repair all of them.
