Student / Youth

Job Training / Internship

SYTI stands for Student/Youth Job Training/Internship. It is a program designed to give students a strong introduction to working in the environmental field. Participating in the SYTI Program helps by:

1) increasing students’confidence in choosing an environmental career path;

2) improving their chances of being accepted into an accredited environmental science program at a college or university; and

3) boosting students’ self-assurance in leadership and communication roles.

The SYTI Program offers students the opportunity to learn scientific research, data collection, and habitat restoration techniques through a combination of monthly seminars and hands-on experience. SYTI allows students the opportunity to work with experts and monitoring equipment and gives them abilities they can apply towards a career choice. Research and restoration occur primarily in Puget Gulch, with additional work occurring in other nearby streams, wetlands, and green spaces.

What are the requirements for participating in the SYTI Program?

1) You are 15 – 21 years old.

2) You are attending a high school or college within Pierce County.

3) You are interested in the environment.

4) You are willing to commit to 6 hours a month for 4 months.

5) You attend at least 2 of the monthly seminars.

Will participating in the SYTI Program fulfill my Senior Culminating Project?

Yes! The requirements of Senior Culminating Projects are designed to encourage students to pursue an interest or curiosity they have and apply it to a real-world setting.  The SYTI Program offers students the support and resources they need to develop a senior project that has meaning and is an effective learning experience for the students. Numerous students from local high schools have completed their Senior Culminating Projects by working with Puget Creek Restoration Society.

How can I fit SYTI into my schedule?

The SYTI program is available to students year round, therefore they are able to start in the program at any time. Not only is SYTI available to students during the week, but it’s also available on the weekend. SYTI tailors the program to fit each student’s schedule.

What if I have no experience whatsoever?

No problem. SYTI will work with you. That’s what our program is all about- to increase your skill level.

What if I want to be an intern?
