Salmon Habitat and Population Restoration

Place Wood Chips on Hillside

PCRS places wood chips on the hillside as yet another aspect of protecting the hill from erosion and cutting down on the amount of sediment entering the stream.

Wood chip placement slows down the flow of surface water run-off, allowing the water to soak into the substrate, where it is stored for a longer period of time, giving plants the opportunity to use the water before it flows right on past.

As they decompose, the wood chips put nutrients into the soil for the vegetation, provide a place for birds and small animals to forage for insects, and provide hiding places for ground-dwelling mammals, amphibians, and birds, as well as protect the soil from drying out.
