Coho and Chum Egg and Fry
Placement
In 1997
and 1998, Scott Hansen helped a local teacher place eyed Coho
eggs in the creek. Paul Billinghurst had been placing eggs in
the creek for 11 years at that point and by 2005, he'd been
doing it for 19 years.
Finally
in 1999, Scott started a project that involves a Chum egg
incubator that
allows for the fry to escape when they are
hatched. The Chum eggs have had success with this project
despite minor setbacks, including some vandalism. This project
has continued annually since it began.
In 1995,
1996, and 1997, the Puyallup Tribal Fisheries placed Chum fry in
the stream and Geiger Elementary students restarted this project
by providing Chum fry placement in 2004 and 2005. Likewise in
2004, 2005, and 2006, students from School of the Arts (SOTA)
placed Coho fry in the stream.
