Monitoring Projects
Sediment Analysis Instream
Since 2003, PCRS has been following the riffle crest gravel sampling
procedure for collecting and analyzing the gravel in Puget and Mason
Creeks. This procedure, created by the Northwest Indian Fisheries
commission, provides data with which to assess the areas that are
amenable for salmon spawning in these streams. The process involves
collecting measured amounts of gravel from
certain areas of the
streams and pouring it through a series of sieves. By analyzing the percentages of the different sizes of the gravel, we can determine
how much of the area contains material viable for salmon spawning.
This process should be done every five years, between April 15th and
October 15th, in order to ensure that there is enough good gravel
for spawning, and if not, to determine the cause of the problem and
find a solution.
